Susan A. Hess

Susan A. Hess, 95, of Mount Joy, passed away on Tuesday, April 15, 2025 at her daughter’s residence with her family by her side. Born in Lititz, she was the daughter of the late Harry and Kathryn (Erb) Shreiner. Susan was the wife of the late Paul C. Hess who passed away on November 19, 2016. Susan was a graduate of Lancaster Mennonite High School class of 1947. Susan is survived by seven children, Sue Hess, wife of Tom Mix of VA, Herb Hess, husband of Sharon of Mount Joy, Jerry Hess, husband of Joanne of Mount Joy, Linda Heisey, wife of the late Craig of Mount Joy, Marlene Hess, wife of Andy of Marietta, Diane Metzler, wife of the late Burt of VA and Jeff Hess, husband of Stacey of Mount Joy; 20 grandchildren; 27 great grandchildren; She was preceded in death by a son, Steven Hess. Susan raised her 8 children on a farm in Mount Joy and helped with the farm work. In her 40”s she attended LPN school and worked at St. Joseph’s hospital for 20 years on the oncology floor. She spent many hours volunteering for Love Inc, Meals on wheels and Mt. Joy Gift and Thrift. Susie was a faithful member of Mount Joy Mennonite Church and taught Sunday school and VBS for many years. She was an avid reader and loved working in her flower gardens as well as mowing yard. Her door was always open and through the years she welcomed many people for meals as well as hosting 2 young girls from New York City through the Fresh Air program. She baked hundreds of cookies each Christmas to share with her neighbors. No one will forget her passion for sports. She attended thousands of family sporting events throughout the years, cheering loudly but above all, Susie is known for her strong faith and the many hours she fasted and prayed for her family and friends. She touched many lives by her warm and engaging spirit. She loved well and will be greatly missed! A memorial service honoring Susan’s life will be held at Mount Joy Mennonite Church, 320 Musser Road, Mount Joy, PA 17552 on Sunday, May 4, 2025 at 2 PM. Family and friends will be received after the service at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Mennonite Central Committee, 21 S. 12th St, Akron, PA 17501 or to Water Street Mission, 210 S Prince St, Lancaster, PA 17603.
