Robert G. Shonk

Robert G. Shonk, 95, also known as Bob or Shonky, passed away on May 22, 2026, at Hospice & Community Care in Mount Joy after a brief illness. Robert spent his last days surrounded by his wife of 30 years, his children and grandchildren. Born in Rapho Twp., he was the son of the late John C. and Verna W. Kline Shonk. Robert began his career as a farmer, then drove truck for S.K. Shotzberger before buying his own truck and becoming an independent hauler. Robert was a member at Florin Church of the Brethren. Robert’s favorite pastimes were his love for John Deere tractors, sharing stories from his years in trucking and cattle hauling, going to sales and in his healthier days, deer hunting in Potter County and spending time on his son’s property in West Virginia. Robert will be missed by his wife Nancy Bullock Shonk, his four children: Dawn (Robert) Houff of Elizabethtown, Douglas (Jeanette Kline) Shonk of Brandy Station, VA., Cathy Hower of Mount Joy and Colleen Metzler of Middletown, his stepchildren: Sherry McClurkin of Tucson, AZ., Christine (Allen) McClellan of Frederick, MD and Troy (Christy Cogan) Anderson of Scottsdale, AZ., and his sister Lorraine (Luke) Nolt, of Manheim. Three sisters: Patsy Shonk, Shirley Merkey, and Gladys Shenk, and a grandson: Jeremy Metzler preceded him in death. Robert’s grandchildren include Emily (Greg) Edwards of Nellysford, VA. Jennifer (Christopher Johnson) Houff of Singapore, Nathan (Krista Kerns) Shonk of Oakton, VA., Bethany (Georgia Newlin) Houff of Harrisonburg, VA., Ryan (Leanne Thoman) Metzler of Newport, PA., his step grandchildren: Griffin Anderson of Philadelphia, PA., Jill (Josh) Airey of Point of Rocks, MD., Brendan (Brittany Adams) Anderson of Raleigh, NC., and Kenneth Thomas of Frederick, MD. Robert’s great grandchildren include Levi and Naomi Edwards, Emerson Shonk, Tyler and Olivia Metzler and a step great grandson Jacob Thoman. Robert’s request is that he be remembered as you last saw him and he will “see some of you later”. The family will lay his ashes to rest on the mountain in his beloved state of West Virginia. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to a visitation with the family at the Gathering Place, 6 Pine Street, Mount Joy, PA on Saturday June 27, 2026 from 6:00-8:30 PM.
