Betty L. Bitzer

Betty passed peacefully surrounded by her family on July 23, 2024 at Hospice and Community Care in Mount Joy, PA. She was 86. The daughter of the late Paul F and Ruth E. McKain, she grew up in Marietta, PA and graduated from Donegal High School in 1956. In addition to her parents, Betty was preceded in death by her siblings, Robert McKain, Janet Ney, and Evelyn Armold, her husband William "Bill" Bitzer, and son in law J. Larry Peifer. She is survived by children Bonnie Peifer, William "Bill" (Judy) Bitzer, Becky Bitzer, granddaughter Tara (Josh) Baker and great granddaughter Avery Baker. In her early years Betty worked for Donegal Mutual Insurance Company. After raising her children she worked for New Standard Corporation in Mount Joy and Hellam, and retired in 2008. Betty was a long time volunteer at Hospice and Community Care in Mount Joy. She received their Legacy of Service Award for her commitment and dedication to the organization. She previously served on the Board at her community, Mount Joy Country Homes. Betty loved her family and was blessed to be able to spend so much time with them, especially her beloved great granddaughter Avery. In addition to family, Betty cherished her friends and the times spent playing cards, porch sitting, competing at shuffleboard and walking around the neighborhood visiting her neighbors. Despite never playing the game, Betty was a golf enthusiast. Most weekends she could be found watching a tournament and often shared her extensive knowledge of all things golf. She also enjoyed watching football, baseball and ice hockey. Other loves were animals, especially her grandcats and granddogs, and spending time at the Delaware beaches with family and friends. Betty was a wonderful daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and friend. She will be missed by all who knew and loved her. The family wishes to thank the wonderful staff and volunteers at Hospice and Community Care for their compassion and care of Betty in her final weeks. As she wished, there will be no service. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice and Community Care, 685 Good Drive, Lancaster, PA 17604.
