Thome, John W.
John W. Thome, 62, of 131 Furnace Hill Road, Elizabethtown went home to be with his Lord and Savior unexpectedly on Monday, March 10, 2008 at Heart of Lancaster Hospital. He was married to Carolyn Fox Thome for two wonderful years. His first wife, Carolyn Sweigart Thome passed away in 2003.
A people person, John was a barber for 44 years, owning and operating Thomeís Barbershop in Elizabethtown for 32 years. He attended Thompsontown United Methodist Church, where he served as the choir director for the past ten years and Ludwig United Methodist Church, Bainbridge. A native of Milton Grove, John served as a past lay leader and past president of the Administrative Board of the Milton Grove United Methodist Church. He was a lifetime member and past president of the Milton Grove Sportsman Club and president of the Milton Grove School Reunion Committee. A trumpet player, John was an active member of the Donegal Alumni Band, participating in parades and festivals. John graduated from Donegal High School in 1963 and from Harrisburg Barber School in 1964. He served in the U. S. Army Reserves and the Army National Guard of Pennsylvania from 1965 until 1971. An avid hunter, John also competed in archery, collecting several trophies. He enjoyed freshwater fishing, especially on the Juniata River, beekeeping, gardening, and bird watching. His love for the outdoors found him spending time in the Centre County mountains and at his second home in Thompsontown. A sports enthusiast, John also enjoyed gospel music and songs from the 1950ís. His strong faith and God given ability to sing, allowed him to share his talent in churches for many years. John had a certain way with people. All who knew him felt his genuine love and care. Above all John cherished the time he spent with his wife, children, grandchildren, and great grandson.
Born in Lancaster, he was the son of Bernard G. Thome, Elizabethtown and the late Mary E. Rutherford Thome.
In addition to his wife, Carolyn and father Bernard, he will be lovingly remembered by his children, Navy SEAL Chief Petty Officer Winfield J. married to Susan Michelle Rote Thome, Moyock, NC, and Lisa R. married to Korbin Rauhauser, York; stepchildren, Joseph P. married to Wendy Livingood Vance, Sinking Spring, Terry J. married to Angel Ortiz II, Mount Joy, William E., Jr., married to Melissa Barras Schweers, Marietta, and Tracey L.
