After completing eighth grade, she helped her parents manage the Shelly family by being the cook and baker for a family of nine. She baked cupcakes and bread and even up to 50 pies a week to take to market in addition to working at the Lincoln Restaurant in Mount Joy. Later, she assisted several families care for their babies locally and in Maryland.
On May 7, 1950, she married Clarence B. Brubaker and became a farmer’s wife. She was blessed to be the mother of three daughters. She would also say that she had an “adopted “ son, Dan Fitzkee, who spent summers helping on the farm.
Her life was filled with caring for her family, helping on the farm, teaching Sunday school, sewing and mending clothes, managing a garden, canning and freezing fruits and vegetables, and cooking and baking. Millie was known for her delicious pies and cakes including shoo fly pie and chocolate cake with peanut butter icing. Eating a meal made by Millie was always a delight and no one went away hungry. Throughout the years, her home was always open to people who needed a place to stay.
In 1963, she started working in the cafeteria at Donegal High School. A year later she moved to Beahm Jr. High where she worked until 1988, earning the title of manager. She then moved to the Donegal Middle School where she was the manager until her retirement in 1991. Millie attended Community Bible Church of Marietta.
Millie was a humble lady who loved unconditionally, often praying for her family, extended family, and friends. She never complained about her aches and pains and was always ready to lend a helping hand. In her free time, she loved to read which took her on many adventures.
