Eugene Z. FunkOctober 17, 1921 ~ June 11, 2017 (age 95)
Eugene Z. Funk, 95, of Mount Joy was called home to be with his Lord on June 11, 2017, at Signature Senior Living, Lancaster. He was the dedicated husband of Sylvia Cassel Funk who passed on December 2, 2010. He will be missed by his three sons and their families, Eugene D. (Judy Stoudt) Funk, Barry L. Funk and Rick L. (Sharon Scott) Funk all of Mount Joy. His 8 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren will also miss his companionship.
A proud veteran of WWII, Eugene served with the US Army, 207th Engineering Battalion and attained the rank of Staff Sergeant. He participated in the Battle of the Bulge and was awarded 5 Bronze Stars for service in Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes and Central Europe. He was also awarded the European, African, Middle Eastern Service and Good Conduct and several other medals. Following his service in the US Army he was employed in Civil Service at the former Olmstead Air Force Base in Middletown and later at the New Cumberland Army Depot where he retired.
A native of Mount Joy he attended the former Mount Joy High School, and was a lifelong member of the Mount Joy Church of God where he earlier served as a Trustee and Elder. Gene was a very devoted supporter of his faith, his country and his family.
Born in Mount Joy, he was the son of the late Oliver M. and Margaret B. Zeager Funk. One of 16 children, he is survived by three sisters, Francanna Taylor and Nancy Jane Tanis, both of Mount Joy, and Ellen Gepfer of Elizabethtown, and an brother Jack (Lorraine) Funk of Mount Joy. He was preceded in death by brothers Oliver, Frank, Russel, Leroy, Warren, Robert, Merlin and Ronald Funk and his sisters, Margaret Craul, Malva Flowers and Joann Eberly.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend Gene’s Funeral from the Mount Joy Church of God, 30 East Main Street, Mount Joy PA on Friday June 16, 2017 at 11 AM. Interment to follow in Laurel Hill Memorial Gardens, Columbia. Gene’s family will receive friends at the church from 9 to 11 AM. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Mount Joy Church of God, 30 East Main Street, Mount Joy PA, 17552 or Masonic Village Hospice, 1 Free Mason Drive, Elizabethtown PA 17022.
