Clayton S. Hickernell, Jr., 92, formerly of Marietta, died on Thursday, November 23, 2017 at Masonic Village at Elizabethtown where he had been a resident for the past four years. Clayton was a loving husband, father and grandfather, and friend to many who often referred to him by his nickname “Hick.”
Clayton was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 52 years, Rosemary Smith Hickernell, who passed away in 2006. He is survived by his son David, daughter-in-law Karen, and granddaughter Jessica Hickernell-Gouker.
Clayton attended the former Mount Joy High School before enlisting in the U.S. Navy in 1943 and joined the Pacific Campaign in World War II. Following his honorable discharge in 1946, Clayton went to work for the former Army Depot in Marietta where he met his wife Rosemary. The two were married on May 14, 1954. In his younger years, Clayton enjoyed hunting, throwing darts and playing cards. He retired in 1980 from the Defense Logistics Agency in Mechanicsburg after 36 years of Federal Service. Following his retirement, he joined the Cool Creek Country Club, and became an avid and decorated golfer. He was a member of the Susquehanna Beneficial Association, the Columbia Elks, American Legion Post 185, and the Mount Joy VFW.
Born in Mount Joy on January 10, 1925, Clayton was the son of the late Clayton and Goldie Hickernell and stepson of the late James Beamenderfer. In addition to his son, daughter-in-law and granddaughter, Clayton will be sadly missed by his niece Cheryll Brown Hallgren and nephew Douglas Brown, brother-in-law David Smith and his wife Kathy. His sister, Doris Longenecker, preceded him in death.
